If you were thinking of purchasing a new vehicle navigational aid, today’s plethora of GPS (Global Positioning Systems) devices makes the choice exceptionally difficult, and it is hard to find a system which is just perfect for you. However, it CAN be done, and is easier than you would have thought – it’s all about figuring out what your requirements will be from your system, and what you will be using it for. You will get the best device possible for driving if you know, before your purchase, that you will use your equipment whilst driving your car. If, however, you intend to use it for hiking, or cycling, then, again, your device will only be suitable if you already know, before you get it, that these are the ways in which you will use it.
That isn’t to say that you will not find devices which will be useful in a varied range of activities, however, it is like the saying goes “Jack of all trades, Master of none”, meaning that if you wish to cover hiking and also driving, your “multi-capable” device will not be AS good, whilst you are using it for either of these two activities, as would a navigation system designed exclusively for driving, or walking, as the case may be.
If you are thinking of using your soon-to-be-purchased system in your car, almost exclusively, then the following devices are probably best placed to cover your requirements: “Tom Tom GO 910 Automotive GPS System”, “Garmin StreetPilot c530 Automotive GPS”, “Tom Tom One, Navman iCN 750 Vehicle Navigation with Camera”, or the “Magellan RoadMate 2200T Portable Navigation System”.
Each of them offers something unique to you and your vehicle, and they all cover most of the great features that drivers have come to adore, such as finding popular places to visit, great restaurants near your current location, landmarks, and, of course, the always appreciated driving directions themselves, such as turnings to take, how to recover your route if you took a wrong turn, voice instructions (in most), etc
For the ultimate in versatility and transportability, you might also want to consider some of the handheld models currently on offer. These GPS devices are fabulous for hiking, providing coverage of little known tracks and routes, which would be almost impossible to find or traverse without a GPS aid. Most of them can also be upgraded to provide driving directions so they can then be used in your auto as well, even if that was not the primary function you were looking to cover.

Although the resulting system may not be as portable as handheld or vehicle systems, the savings and versatility offered, as well as the possibility to improve and change functions and features over time, are very attractive features. These are of course, plenty more exciting systems and devices available on the market today, space and time constraints have limited the amount of systems we have been able to review and test. As with computers and technology gadgets in general, new functionality is constantly, and rapidly, being developed, and you should keep an eye out for the latest features available. Due to the speed with which the technology market moves, prices do tend to drop quite rapidly, as each day the new “latest and greatest” gadget is released. When looking for your new system, whether it be a “car Navigation GPS System” or a handheld system, you should watch for new product releases, and check to see the possible savings you can make by purchasing a product released 6 to 10 months ago, as you will most definitely now be able to find it at a bargain price compared to the original price when it was launched.
Other ways to save your hard earned cash is to look at mid-range models, as opposed to high-end, and do not pay extra for features you do not intend to use.
