If Your Van Is Over 9 Years Old, You Could Bag Yourselves A Grand

The UK government have put forward proposals to use the same £2K car scrapping deal that is in action for cars, on vans as well. The government will pay you a mighty £1000 for scraping your car at the moment, as long as it is 9 years or older. Additionally, you can get another £1000 from a car manufacturer if you decide to buy a new one from them. The reasons that this was introduced where to get rid of cars that were harmful to the environment and unsafe, and also to get some money flowing into the new car sectors. The first set of results from the scheme are looking positive, with initial indications showing a 9.5% increase on last year for sales of new cars.

The government has been quick to pick up on the positive findings that new car manufacturers are reporting and are already looking into the possibility of using the same idea in the van market. The van industry is suffering much the same as the new car market, with construction industries gearing down and more companies choosing to use van contract hire rather than buy. In much the same way as the car deal, van owners could pick up £1K if they decide to get rid of the 9+ year old van. There would then be another incentive, which is yet to be agreed by van manufacturers, to purchase a new van rather than lease one.

Makers of vans that have shown positive signs towards adopting the scheme include Fiat, Ford and Mitsubishi. Ford’s spokesman Tim Miles said “anything that boosts the van market and helps keep people in their jobs can only be a good thing”. He went on to say that ford van leasing still is a big business for them but they would still prefer people buy new. older vans simply don’t have the necessary safety features that the newer models do. Every year there are thousands of injuries caused to people in vans and this number could be brought down if newer models where upgraded to.
