Jeep Commander – Key Things To Consider

Jeep Commander: the true outlander

Sometime ago the word “jeep” became the synonym to outlander and Jeeps never broke this tradition as new Jeep Commander met all the “outlander’s standards”.

The straight forms, bunch of rectangular elements inside and outside, rough radiator greed and wheel arches, heavily opened trunk compartment door with massive chromed rods – it looks like Hammer. But it’s a description of the biggest Jeep vehicle Commander.

Commander is the 1st Jeep designed for 7 seating places and in rest features it is charismatic Grand Cherokee (in fact it is a bigger version of Cherokee) and though seated at the last row won’t have as much comfort as the front seated ones still they would have enough room for legs. Besides, the back row passengers have their own climate control and additional windows with curtains in the roof providing additional light.

With first glance to Commander’s doors size and geometry it might seem you would have troubles with chairs set up but all chairs switch their positions easily and it is essential for with 3rd row of chairs set Jeep practically loses a room for trunk.

Its suspension works good enough for all the road bumps Jeep crosses just with two jumps. Though with a “successful” jump you may hit the roof with your head and that is the fault of designers. Even the small bumps would be felt by the car body and passengers constantly feel side and vertical shaking because of huge outer dimensions and high gravity center.

Couple weird solutions of cabin include front seats safety belts designed for big people so the skinny ones would sit loosely and absence of the rod over the right front door.

The car got 326 hp 5.7 liters Hemi engine providing good acceleration even with poor body kick-down regime. Still the car easily responds to accelerator but may be hard to keep on track in turns as you have to take some time to get used to steer and front wheel connection. The breaks are not aggressive but their ABS system activates too early shaking the car body in turning curves.

When riding the ground roads the car just “flies”. Losing in speed the passengers on not smooth roads feel more comfort though. For the cases with no roads Commander as every Grand Cherokee has Quadra-Drive II system with 3 self-blocking differentials (in Russia comes together with 5.7l engine). If needed Quadra-Drive II is able to block not only the intra-axes differential but the front or the rare axis. So, the car scores high on cross-country ability tests.

Small overhangs, big clearance and big suspension moves provide the heavier than Grand Cherokee car with better geometrical practicability. The engine that is at its maximum from 2500 turns and shift gear with down going sequence that is turned on by lever in central tunnel allow the driver not to worry what is under the wheels.

So, new Jeep Commander is a real “Jeep” and its driver is able to ride it everywhere with confidence in car and himself.
