The unique series of BMW Art Cars
First part
The idea of creation of series BMW Art Cars has come to mind to the French racer Hervé Poulain. He has wanted to invite the well-known artists that they would transform BMW cars into a canvas. BMW Art Cars series have begun in 1975 when Poulain has invited the friend and artist Alexander Kaldera. First “canvas” has become BMW 3.0 CSL. This creation has become one of last creations of the artist and the sculptor. To the sculptor who has created very non-standard and bright sculptures – “mobiles”, has managed to create a really wonderful car. At car “drawing” bright paints have been used that has made wings, cowl and a roof bright, passing each other and forming geometrical figures.
In 1975 this car has participated in the 24-hour race in Le Mans under control of American Sam Posey and also Jean Guichet and Herve Poulain. Unfortunately, in 7 hours of race the car has withdrawn. This car on a line has not appeared anymore – it has taken the lawful place in BMW museum.
Following canvas also has been BMW 3.0 CSL. Artist Frank Stella has been engaged in it. The car represents the whole set of the lines having the form of graph paper that does the car similar to the drawing. Frank Stella has solved from the classical form of painting and began to search for inspiration in technical aura of two-door BMW 3.0 CSL. This car has taken part in 24-hour race of Le Mans – specially for Frank Stella who has been the fan of these races. It has been the most unusual premiere of his work.
