Heathrow Introduce State-Of-The-Art Taxi System

by Auto on August 13, 2009

A state-of-the-art traffic system has been developed for Heathrow Airport to try and reduce congestion. The system is one of a kind, it features 21 driverless electric shuttles that will be controlled using computer power.

The 21 shuttles will run along a two and a half mile pathway between the business car park and Heathrow’s Terminal 5. Each shuttle carries 4 passengers, as well as their luggage, travelling at 25mph, the system is targeted to carry over 500,000 passengers every year.

Bristol University are helping the company Advanced Transport Systems Ltd to develop the new technology for the giant airport. They have said that the shuttles are easy and comfortable to use, plus they are environmentally friendly as they use computers and laser guidance software to deliver their passengers.

This system is the first step to creating cars that will automatically drive us to our destination that we inputted to the on-board computer. Systems that we see in futuristic films such as I-Robot and Minority Report look like less of a dream and more like reality.

As we see this technology become more developed, out lives could be changed for the better as our cars would detect traffic movements and avoid collisions, saving lives. This new technology may be good for us, whether the motor sector and the contract hire industry will enjoy having to make these changes to another matter.

The motoring industry are already suffering from the recession so the last thing manufacturers and companies offering cheap van leasing will want is to be required to build new driverless vehicles. Although many motoring companies won’t welcome the changes, with technology being the way it is, in the near future companies will be required to offer a driverless BMW lease.
