Altezza lights are rear brake lights that have a transparent lens placed over a group of round, red lamps. Toyota was the first to feature the unique-looking lights on their Altezza model sedan and can sometimes be referred to as ‘European Altezza’ or basically ‘Euro-style’ lamps. The lights were then sold on the Lexus IS300, but the name ‘Altezza’ has stayed with the unique rear brake lights. These lights have since been designed to be adaptable to other cars and are only referred to as Altezza lights in the US.
These type of lights are not legal in every state in the US and can also be outlawed in various countries. If a person loves the look of Altezza lights, he or she will want to check with their local law enforcement agency or motor vehicle department to assess whether or not they can use Altezza lights in their area. When they are legally installed in the US, the Department of Transportation should at the least, certify them. Although Department of Transportation certification doesn’t guarantee the legality of Altezza lights in any area, it may point to that possibility.
Not all of these lights are legal anywhere in the US and do not comply with state or federal laws. Some Altezza lights don’t have side marker functionality that is necessary for OEM lamps while other clear rear lights do not have red reflectors and proper side markers that make them clearly non-compliant with any state or federal laws. One state that does not allow any Altezza lights is Oregon and they have even put up their own web page in order to explain why they believe that Altezza lights are not safe.
The debate about the safety and legality of Altezza lights has continued in recent years resulting in recalled vehicles that have these lights are violating state or federal standards. If a person is interested in finding out more about lights and lighting standards can find that kind of information on nonpublic web site about motor vehicle lighting standards. Aside from the legalities and standards involved with Altezza lights, the only consumer complaint Altezza light owners make is that when the lights are not installed properly, they may collect and pass water.
